Ways To Keep Motivated During Virtual School - Part 1

This fall, physical school’s remain closed in the Seattle area. Band and choir (and the rest of student’s academics!) are online, and several of my students have been finding it hard to stay motivated to practice when the usual band and choir events aren’t happening as usual this fall.

Without physical band class as a main motivator to keep up trumpet skills, I thought I’d share some of the ways I am staying motivated in a four part weekly series.

This week: Unaccompanied Solos!

There are some awesome collections of unaccompanied trumpet solos great for Intermediate/ early advanced trumpet players that are fun to play and sound great without the usual piano accompaniment that goes along with most repertoire.

The book I selected to feature this week was new to me: 20 Dances for Trumpet by Allen Vizzutti. This week I played through a bunch of them and chose one that I liked called “Flamenco.” I spent a few days practicing and then recorded it at the end of the week. Since I knew I had to record it at the end of the week, I was more excited to go through my routine as well.

It was fun to have a project with a deadline and cool to put together the solo - it fits great on the horn!

Here’s the link to the book if you want to add it to your collection:

Next week I’ll be sharing Part 2 - recording a solo with a YouTube accompaniment track. Stay tuned!
